Pole Sign vs. Monument Sign — Do You Have a Choice?

If you can choose, install a pole sign—you’ll be glad you did.

Visibility & Reach

Pole/Pylon Signs: Tall freestanding signs (often 20–100+ ft) for maximum long-range visibility—ideal along highways and fast traffic corridors. They rise above buildings and trees and pair well with LED displays. Studies cited by sign companies indicate well-placed signs can lift traffic 13–35%.

Monument Signs: Shorter, ground-level signs (˜5–12 ft) that shine up close—great at entrances and in slower traffic or pedestrian areas; more about prestige and architectural fit.

Value takeaway: Pole signs win for capturing distant motorists; monuments win for premium curb appeal and local brand presence.

Branding & Aesthetics

Pole Signs: Prioritize function and visibility; can host larger displays and multi-tenant listings. They stand out (sometimes intentionally so) and can feel commercial in residential/mixed zones.

Monument Signs: Blend with architecture/landscape using brick, stone, or stucco—ideal for schools, campuses, and corporate sites projecting permanence and quality.

Cost & Maintenance

Pole Signs: Higher upfront cost (height/structure/installation) but excellent advertising ROI in high-traffic areas; low ongoing maintenance with modular faces.

Monument Signs: Typically lower upfront cost; may need more frequent cleaning/landscaping to keep appearances sharp.

Zoning & Location

Pole Signs: Often height-restricted; ideal near highways, large lots, or industrial parks. Our Sign Experts confirm what’s allowed in your area.

Monument Signs: More commonly permitted in residential or mixed-use zones due to lower profile and aesthetics.

McDonald’s reports that replacing a monument sign with a pole sign increases a store’s sales volume by ~15% on average.

Are You a “Visual” Person?

It’s hard to picture a sign from a drawing alone. What comes to mind when you hear “triple-layer multi-colored lighting with a textured backplate”?

Our showroom solves that. Most people need to see and compare in person to judge value. Seeing is believing.

Don’t buy your sign from a drawing, a slick website, or photoshopped pictures—see and side-by-side compare real signs and designs.

Visit Our Unique Sign Showroom

Are you a “visual” person? Is seeing believing?

Unique in the sign industry, American Sign Association™ built an 85’ × 50’ (4,000+ sq ft) indoor sign lighting laboratory to test longevity, visibility, and effectiveness of the lighted signs we manufacture. Open to the public—FREE.

Don’t buy your sign from a drawing or a slick website—see and side-by-side compare real signs and designs.

Thousands have learned how design, materials, construction, and lighting affect business results.

Explore every major sign type up close and from a distance, under varied lighting—without braving the weather.

Push-through letter sample Will your sodium vapor or metal halide lot lights shift your colors at night? How visible will border neon be in daylight? Should you consider PinLights™, LetterLites™, SpectraLites™, or Trembler™? Brighter Signs™ neon or SolarBrite™ LED for channel letters? Fluorescent or HID for monuments? Do Daylight or Cool White lamps make your colors pop?

How will shadows affect readability? Should the wall behind your sign be light or dark? Would a different sign type suit brick better? Should you choose a routed face with push-through letters?

See it all in person and compare—side-by-side.

Better Sign Products

No one else offers this breadth of upgrades in one place—take advantage of it.

Your business will be better because you do.

If you don’t visit, it could cost thousands in lost sales each year. Can you afford not to?

“I almost made a huge mistake by not visiting your showroom. Once inside, it was obvious my ‘vision’ from drawings would have been a disaster. I would have wasted a lot of money.” — Cecil Drake, Drake Communications

“Fifteen years ago you made a lighted sign for me. It STILL looks new, but finally needs electrical service…” — Lawrence Badger, M.D.

Why Buy Factory-Direct from a State-Licensed Company?

Why not a sign dealer/broker, car-wrap company, or sign store?

Would you hand a car dealer $10,000 and ask for the “best” car sight-unseen? You’d likely get the car that makes them the most—not what fits your needs.

Dealers often resell someone else’s sign to resemble a drawing. You need the details of how it’s built and installed to meet your needs, not someone else’s margin targets.

Many dealers can’t legally install or service electric signs. Ask for their license—and the manufacturer’s. Some makers aren’t licensed to do electrical work and hire others to install.

Who backs the warranty—the manufacturer, the installer, the salesperson? If an install was illegal, will anyone honor it? Were permits really obtained? Is the sign safe?

As a large UL and ETL listed manufacturer, our name is on every sign. With our 5-Year $0 Cost Warranty and Lifetime Guarantees, we can’t afford to cut corners—neither can you.

Texas does not allow installation of non-Listed electrical signs. A TSCL alone is not evidence of an OSHA-approved listing—additional approvals are required.

Why Are “Listed” Signs Critical to You?

ETL listing mark UL listed mark

Virtually all cities—and the State of Texas—adopt the National Electrical Code (NEC) as law.

The NEC requires electric signs to be Listed (tested and labeled with an approved listing mark) for structural, electrical, and installation safety.

OSHA recognizes which U.S. testing labs can certify to the required standards.

UL certification badge For you, the listing mark is insurance. It proves the sign has been tested for safety and proper installation—so you’re not just taking our word for it.

Will your sign be approved for wet (outdoor) use? Not if it’s not Listed.

If the sign you’re purchasing doesn’t carry an ETL or UL listing mark, it’s probably not legal to install anywhere in Texas (with a few city-specific exceptions).

Buy carefully.

Construction

Whataburger marquee in Cedar Hill, Texas Pole sign with channel letters in Irving, Texas For strength, durability, and appearance, illuminated signs are built with aluminum (#3003 H14—never soft aluminum) over a welded structural-steel inner frame.

Large metal areas are reinforced to prevent “oil-canning.”

The internal structural-steel frame is painted before skins are installed—preventing future rust stains.

We also fabricate pylon signs with real or artificial brick, stone, and stucco finishes. (See our “Bricks & Masonry” page.)

All signs are engineered for North Texas winds (140 mph). Pole-attached signs are welded, not bolted.

Certified Welding

We employ Certified Welders—horizontal, vertical, and overhead.

We are virtually the only sign company in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex employing certified welders.

Automatic Electronic Thermal Lighting Controls*

When our founder managed a grocery store, he saw sales rise on cloudy or rainy days—if he remembered to turn the signs on.

In the South, tinted glass often hides interior lighting—making it harder to tell if a business is open.

With today’s efficient LED illumination, it costs very little to make your store stand out.

What’s the main reason Sunburst™ LED outdoor digital signs lift sales? Lighted signs draw far more attention—even during the day.

Lighting control concept: detecting light and shadow We install automatic electronic lighting controls on every lighted sign we manufacture*—factory-calibrated to switch on/off precisely when lighting will help you do more business. Over 40+ years we’ve documented the exact thresholds for dark/rainy days, shadow conditions, and dusk transitions. The result: a sign that’s more attention-getting and more legible.

Settings vary by orientation (E/W/N/S), light source (neon, HID, fluorescent, LED), and construction.

Controls sense both ambient light and shadows that hinder readability, then activate internal lighting accordingly. Each sign is custom-set.

We include this to maximize your visibility. As far as we know, no other sign manufacturer offers this—free or paid.

For best results, have your electrician add a time clock to keep signs off when they never need to be on (e.g., 2:30–5:30 AM). At all other times, let our automatic controls decide. Use electricity wisely to maximize visibility while conserving energy.

Intermatic/Tork time clocks aren’t fine-grained, and dawn/dusk shift rapidly seasonally. Relying on time clocks alone means constant manual resets and overrides on dark days—which rarely happens in practice. That’s why we include calibrated automatic thermal lighting controls on every outdoor sign we build*—and we do not use imprecise photo eyes.

Anecdotal results show the profit lift from this feature alone can exceed the sign’s annual cost.

See the system live in our Sign Lighting Laboratory and Showroom—review our testing and decide for yourself.

*Dependent on size and design.

Failure mode is “always on”—you’ll never be left dark; at worst you’ll use a bit more electricity until we service it.

Signs Are Like Boats

Sinking boat cautionary image $50,000 boats and $400 boats are both “boats,” but only one will keep you afloat. Details matter.

If a company invests in better lighting, paints, protective coatings, and construction—they’ll say so. Pay attention to what they don’t tell you.

Our websites, literature, and proposals detail exactly what we quote and why.

Nobody includes quality and features they don’t describe in their literature and quotations.

Have you seen otherwise?

Your sign is often the first thing customers see. Its quality impacts your success.

Buyer beware: nothing hurts a business more than bad signage.
